Being healthy and having good wellbeing is something each individual desires, as it radiates positivity, achievements, and a sense of accomplishment. From time-to-time, we all need a little extra support to get us through the days. Positive Smiles aims to deliver a range of community-based projects, with social inclusion and social cohesion laying at the heart of all we do.

Mental health problems are common. Up to one in four people will experience poor mental health at some point in their lives. They could be caused by stressful events such as losing a job, bereavement, or money issues. These feelings can frequently be intense but are often temporary. With the right support and help, people make good, positive steps towards recovery.

Health and Well-Being plays an important role in your life. Listed below are a few reasons why:

  • Improves relationships with family and friends
  • Helps you find fulfilment in life
  • Improved sleep and sufficient rest
  • Well-Being assists in quicker recovery from illnesses
  • Begin to attract positive behaviour
  • Influencing people close to you in a positive manner

Positive Smiles has created a platform, delivering Health & Well-Being related courses, workshops, programmes, and opportunities to give time and energy to build wellbeing together as a community. Through delivering these services, it helps us connect, gives us a purpose and a sense of achievement.

‘The 5 Ways of Well-Being’

We are encouraged to eat at least five fruit and vegetables a day to take care of our physical health. Similarly, for our mental health, research carried out by the New Economics Foundation found that there are five ways to wellbeing:

  • Connect
  • Be active
  • Take notice
  • Keep learning
  • Give

The Five Ways to Wellbeing activities are simple actions people can do in their everyday lives that can improve emotional health. All five of these suggestions are free, easily achievable, and applicable to everyone’s life regardless of their circumstances. Many of us will already be doing some of the ‘5 ways’ some of the time without even being aware of it. Even small things can enhance wellbeing: whether it’s getting out and about, doing a good deed, or learning to do something new.

Our various different courses allows the community to come together, to strengthen their physical and emotional selves, learning something new, exploring hobbies and new interests while making new friends, and we can help you learn techniques to better manage your life, or mental and physical health.

We work in conjunction with our specialist local services, ensuring we refer our clients to the appropriate agencies while fully supporting them throughout their experiences.

Bringing you a free telephone befriending support service, delivering 1-1 multi-lingual weekly calls from a member of the team, operating for those who wish to make a new friend, have a conversation, or share a worry. Its important to remember that no matter what the pandemic has brought you, it is okay to feel anxious, worried, down, maybe even positive during these challenging times.

We have an experienced team operating in Blackburn with Darwen and Rochdale, who are available to talk regularly, as not having this support can become lonely, particularly in the current global pandemic.

Madat 24/7 is a free telephone friendship service, mainly for people aged 50 and over, though extending to other individual as required. We will match each person with a like-minded person from our pool of volunteers, who are keen to make a new friend and provide support. Not having someone to talk to regularly can be lonely, particularly in the current global pandemic, and these are people who have been used to sharing their home and time with others.

Positive Smiles aims to provide talking and listening therapies, registration onto courses and programs to enhance functional, wellbeing or employability skills accordingly, and making relevant referrals and signposting onto partnering agencies and other organisations for additional support. Weekly calls will assist individuals in developing healthy and positive coping strategies, boosting self confidence and self-esteem, promoting creating new hobbies and developing new skills despite the pandemic.
